These are some books that I really enjoyed and found useful. Note that caveat lector applies.

Bibles and References

  1. biblehub.com - The best English resource for comparing versions, researching original language texts and reading many well known commentaries.

  2. bbbible.com - Quick access to multiple Japanese versions. Not as user friendly as English websites but useful nonetheless.

  3. lumina.bible.org - Official home of the NET Bible. The NET is my preferred English version because of the copious translation notes and consideration given to reasonable use.

  4. Synthetic Harmony of the Four Gospels - Very interesting harmony of the Gospels.

  5. UBS 5th Revised Greek New Testament Reader’s Edition

  6. Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia: A Reader’s Edition

Books about Christianity

  1. Authority and Submission (a.k.a. Spiritual Authority) - The classic text on authority by Watchman Nee. Still unrivaled in its clear exposition on this topic. The Japanese edition goes in and out of print.

  2. Institutes of Biblical Law - No other text have I found that gives as much insight into the law of Moses and how it applies today, and worth reading despite a few more controversial passages.* Since no Japanese edition exists I have included an overview in my course on Biblical law for Takusei.

  3. Practice of the Presence of God - This book opened up for me the world of monasticism. The maxims are extremely practical as well. The Japanese version unfortunately is quite unreadable.

  4. Praying the Bible: The Book of Prayers - This book served as the foundation for praying and singing prophetically from the word for many major intercession movements.

  5. A Study of Biblical Eschatology - Clear and concise defense of the traditional reformed amillennial position with many notes and questions to assist study.

  6. 150 Chapters on the End Times - The modern premillennial dispensational position is well represented by Mike Bickle of IHOP-KC. This list is a good place to start your own studies.

  7. The C.S. Lewis Signature Classics - The master of modern apologetics.

  8. The Book of Mysteries - The quality of presentation can be a little hit and miss, and I don't fully endorse the author, but the devotional style makes it easy to pace the reading.

  9. The Cost of Discipleship - Bonhoeffer’s classic work on costly grace.

  10. Wikichurch - World changing discipleship

  11. Holiness (J. C. Ryle)

  12. Fight: A Christian Case for Non-Violence

  1. The Personal MBA - A real one-stop-shop. Everything you need to know about business. A Japanese edition is also available.

  2. Dave Ramsey - Personal finance that works.
